Human Papilloma Virus is the name for a group of viruses that includes over 100 different strains.  More than 30 of those strains are sexually transmitted.  It usually causes no symptoms.  Therefore, most people who have an HPV infection do not realize it.  Infection with Human Papilloma Virus is common and appears to occur shortly after sexual debut. In the U.S. today, studies indicate that 62% of adolescents have been sexually active by the 12th grade.  As a result, 25 to 40% of adolescents and young adults may become infected with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which can cause cervical cancer in later life.  Seventy four percent of new HPV infections are estimated to occur in the 15-24 year old age group.  This age group represents about 25% of the sexually experienced U.S. female population.

The HPV vaccine, given in three doses over 18 months, protects almost 100% of recipients from developing diseases caused by the four HPV types covered by the vaccine.   However, it does not cure an already existing infection. When initially given to 'tweens and young teenagers, the HPV vaccine is most effective, as compared to being first administered in the twenty-something age bracket.  The HPV vaccine is well tolerated and is without serious adverse events. It is a killed virus vaccine and does not contain thimerosal (a mercury preservative). Because of the enhanced response in the younger adolescent, the protective response lasts longer through the 20’s and early 30's. The HPV vaccine has superior efficacy and longevity when initiated early, before girls are mature or sexually active.

The staff and doctors of PAMPA encourage you to immunize your young adolescent and NOT postpone the HPV vaccine until your daughters are of college age. The immune response is stronger at age 9 years than at 11 years, and stronger at age 11 years than during the college years.  Talk to your daughter’s health care provider about the HPV vaccine.
