Many of you may be wondering why there is now a national recommendation for a second chickenpox vaccine. Epidemics of chickenpox across the nation have occurred in the last few years in spite of many individuals having had one chickenpox immunization. This has lead our public health advisors to the following conclusion: “Immunity to chickenpox following two doses of chickenpox vaccine, as is currently recommended, is optimum and  approaches the same protection that results from natural chickenpox infection.” Hospitalizations following chickenpox and severe complications of chickenpox such as secondary bacterial skin infections (flesh eating bacteria), pneumonia, and severe scarring continue to decrease since the introduction of the chickenpox vaccine. Adding the booster vaccine as required by state law, should reduce this disease, its complications, and loss of time from school and work even further.

We look forward to protecting your child from preventable disease and to answering all your questions about childhood/adolescent immunization at your child's next check-up.
